Macarthur Coal Limited is a public company that listed on the Australian Stock Exchange on 1 July 2001.
The Company is Queensland-based with its mining assets situated in Queensland’s Bowen Basin and its corporate office located in Brisbane.
Macarthur Coal's principal product is low volatile pulverised coal injection coal (PCI coal) for use in the production of steel. Macarthur Coal is a key supplier of low volatile PCI coal to the steel mills of Asia, Europe and Brazil and also produces some thermal and coking coal.
Macarthur Coal's major assets are a 73.3% share in Coppabella Mine and Moorvale Mine through the Coppabella & Moorvale Joint Venture (CMJV) (which together provide approximately one third of the total volume of low volatile PCI coal exported from Australia) and a 74.66% share of the Middlemount Mine project.
Macarthur Coal has large prospective exploration tenement holdings which provide a project portfolio for the development of new coal mines.
Macarthur Coal’s mines and exploration tenements (excepting the Middlemount Mine project) are held within unincorporated joint ventures, a structure which has allowed the Company to gain significant strategic benefits by involving other parties in its projects. Our production joint venture participants are: CITIC Resources Australia Pty Ltd, Marubeni Corporation, Sojitz Corporation, JFE Shoji Trade Corporation, and NS Trading Co Ltd.
The Middlemount Mine project is an incorporated joint venture with Paway Ltd (part of the Noble Group Ltd). Paway holds the remaining 25.34% of the Middlemount project.
Macarthur Coal employs around 270 people directly and more than 320 people through contractors.
Macarthur Coal provides the expertise to manage the mines and exploration program on behalf of the joint venture participants. Macarthur Coal carries out all mining operations at Coppabella Mine. Contractors are engaged to undertake mining operations at Moorvale Mine and Middlemount bulk sample operations.
