Macarthur Coal manages the environmental impact of its operations while maximising the economic recovery of coal.
Mining operations at Coppabella and Moorvale mines are carried out in accordance with site specific Environmental Impact Statements, Environmental Management overview Strategies, Plans of Operations, and management plans. Each of these documents has been approved by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Amendments made to these documents are also subject to EPA approval. Some environmental documents are available to the public by contacting the EPA or Macarthur Coal.
The environmental activities at Coppabella and Moorvale mines are managed by the joint venture manager Macarthur Coal (C&M Management) Pty Ltd (MCCM). MCCM has responsibility for ensuring that all site contractors install, maintain and operate all plant and equipment and take all necessary measures to ensure compliance with the conditions of the EPA.
To maintain a high level of environmental performance, and Environmental and Government Liaison Officer oversees environmental obligations and a full-time Environmental Coordinator is engaged to manage day-to-day environmental matters including monitoring environmental impacts and ensuring compliance with environmental regulations.
Training in environmental awareness forms part of each employee’s minesite induction which covers waste minimisation, water management, weed and pest management, cultural heritage issues, and environmental incident reporting obligations.
